What this relationship means: Studied on mast cells directly, but in cell culture or animals rather than in people. The study-design field distinguishes human cells from non-human models. A mechanism demonstrated in a dish is a reason to investigate, not a result — and the concentrations used are frequently ones that human exposure does not reach.

Mechanism of action

Epigallocatechin gallate is a catechin found in green tea and sold as a dietary-supplement ingredient. In a screening study using the HMC-1 human mast-cell line, EGCG was one of several catechins and related polyphenols reported to reduce expression of the high-affinity IgE receptor FcεRI. The authors linked that finding to reduced generation of the receptor’s gamma-chain subunit.

That is a narrow laboratory endpoint in a cell line. The paper did not study MCAS patients, administer EGCG to people, or establish a clinical consequence from the receptor-expression change. It also does not make brewed tea, green-tea extract, EGCG, and chemically modified catechin derivatives interchangeable. This entry therefore records a specific FcεRI-related experiment rather than describing EGCG as a general mast-cell stabiliser.
