What this relationship means: Studied on mast cells directly, but in cell culture or animals rather than in people. The study-design field distinguishes human cells from non-human models. A mechanism demonstrated in a dish is a reason to investigate, not a result — and the concentrations used are frequently ones that human exposure does not reach.
Mechanism of action
Perilla is both a food plant and the source of many non-equivalent preparations. This entry is deliberately narrower: it covers leaf extract enriched or standardized for rosmarinic acid, not culinary shiso, Perilla oil, seed extracts, essential oil, or rosmarinic acid isolated from another plant.
A small randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study enrolled people with mild seasonal allergic rhinoconjunctivitis. The investigators tested a Perilla extract enriched for rosmarinic acid and recorded symptom diaries, nasal-lavage cells and inflammatory mediators, and serum IgE. This supports the adjacent-condition trial label; it is not an MCAS study and did not measure a mast-cell change in people.
The direct laboratory work on mast cells comes from a separate experiment using a defined ethanol extract powder and isolated rosmarinic acid as distinct test materials. Investigators examined NF-kB/RelA and caspase-1 activation in activated human mast cells and also used an ovalbumin-sensitized mouse model. Those experiments establish a laboratory signal, not equivalence among products or a clinical MCAS outcome.
A crossover pharmacokinetic study in healthy volunteers detected rosmarinic acid and related metabolites after Perilla-extract intake. That confirms human exposure to constituents of the studied preparation, but it did not assess mast cells or clinical outcomes. A currently marketed US supplement lists a rosmarinic-acid-standardized Perilla leaf extract alongside other active ingredients; that documents dietary-supplement availability, not that the commercial combination reproduces any cited study.
